Old Branson Photo...

For years Husband and I have noticed a series of steps/stairs across river from (what is now) the Landing. They are against the bluff line, going from the lake level to the top. There are just a few, short, sections left. But you can tell that, at one time, it was "something."

Is this what we've noticed?

I'm thinking it is the same steps but was reluctant to say so. Was hoping that someone who knows for sure would speak up. That's why I hope there are enough of those steps left to get a photo. Thanks!

I learned of another set of steps like this too but I'm pretty sure they aren't the same. We went looking for them one day. They are in Hollister and called "The Cedar Steps".

Preacherman:

I googled "the cedar steps, hollister, Mo.:"

and this is what I got:

The Cedar Steps – located on BB Highway at the East end of St. James Street Bridge were constructed in 1936. There are 229 steps and 33 landings with beautiful views and landscaping

Thanks Laurie! I hadn't googled those. If I don't forget, I will get a pic of them too.

These seem to be the Mt. Branson steps. Glad you asked the question because I hadn't notice these yet. Noticed them as we were coming down the 76 hill toward downtown today. As you can tell, they are across from the fountains on the Landing.

Closer

These are the steps that are directly across from the bridge that I've seen for years but know nothing about them. You can see the bottom cement access to the left of that sign?

There is also a set of concrete steps at the east end of the Taneycomo Bridge that have long been abandoned and will see their ultimate end when the cliff is blasted out for the roundabout. They led to the top of Hollister hill and were in use up until the mid/late 60's.

What's left at this point in post #5 (the last pic). I was wondering if this is on what was called Presbyterian Hill?

I sat one day many many years ago, on those cement steps at the old landing...feeding the ducks and talking to an old man, who had always lived there. (I now cannot recall his name)...he was friends with the people who constructed Sammy Lanes Resort and that Restaurant that was right there...Italian?

Anyway...we were looking at some steps across the way though my binoculars and he said that he remembered when the ''bathing beauties'' of the 20s and 30s came to sit there and put their feet in the water...and I think he said there were some docks there where there were john boats, or row boats ... and they went a rowing for the afternoon....he said he was a kid back then and peeked cause they all seemed to be romancing.

This old man was there several times when I went to feed the ducks of old....( I always went to feed the ducks.)..........

I seem to remember there were more sections of steps back then...oh about 25 years ago...I guess they have rotted and fallen off into the water...........

Don't you wish they could talk? Or don't you wish those bluffs would give up their secrets?

Many years ago there was a bridge that went across Taneycomo where the landing is now, you could see the concrete pillars across the lake on the Hollister Side. However, in one of the many floods (before they built the dam system, the bridge was wiped out. What is left is the pillars and the steps.

You are right, before when you came down the river, you landed at the dock and had to walk up the steps to get to the area where there were lodging, etc. Way before cars etc.

Wow... all this time I thought those steps were just there for the house owners to have access to the lake. Thanks for sharing this old photo and all the info!

Good reading...when done go to bottom, and go to the next article. Not specifically about what is in this thread...but it's about the area. Some of you history buffs might like it.
