Be careful where you go down town. I worked in Baton Rouge for 6 months and then back for a few weeks to a month for the next several years.
There are some areas of that town I would not drive into without a the National Guard and then we would probably be outguned. I was warned by the people that live there the bad parts of town and what was "safe or safer". I pulled off the freeway for gas once (got caught in a traffic jam and was running low) and a bullet flew by my head. I was a white guy in the wrong part of town and that means it was open season on "dude in suit". I can tell you lots of tales about that town. There are some very nice things to do BUT talk to people before you get out. The people will tell you where it is safe and not safe to go. I went to the Casino and it was safe but a few blocks off and it got "real bad". Just wanted to warn you. I lived in Little Rock for many years and the crime / gangs were bad BUT not anything to how it is in Baton Rouge. |

I live in central Louisiana and some parts of Baton Rouge is bad including the college area. I recommend seeing the state capital. It is the tallest state capitol in the U.S. It is beautiful. Also the USS KIDD is really awesome. (www.usskidd.com) The Louisiana Mall is one of the nicest malls I've ever been in, it is 3 stories. Don't wander far off of I-10 or I-12. These are all the nicest areas in town. There is also an outlet mall in Gonzales which is about 1 hour south of Baton Rouge. Hope you have a good time.
