Trip to New England
We are considering going north on our vacation this year. It looks like we will be able to go around the end of October, does anyone know what the weather is like in Vermont and Maine at that time of year.
Thanks Deb |

At the end of October, you will be in for quite a bit of rain, and low temperatures.......especially at night. You could have snow on the higher elevations, too.
Can you go during the beginning of October to capitalize on New England's Colours? Coach Man.

I dont see any way that we can get away before the end of October, and it may well be the first of November. Should we plan on going somewhere else? If there is snow, will it be enough to hamper travel? Thanks Deb

Well, you never know how things will work out, but we will be leaving for New England in a couple hours. We are going to Niagra Falls, then across Vermont & New Hampshire to Portland, Maine, then down to Portsmouth NH and to Cape Ann & Plymouth MA. We will gone about 8 or 9 days, just gonna play it loose and take our time, hopefully, but DH says the sooner we leave the sooner we will be home. We will probably have words before we get home, but that is not unusual, we always do.LOL

I made the Sea Crossing on THE CAT; http://www.thecat.com from Portland, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, this morning. It was very rough with plenty of people becoming sea-sick. I spent the last couple of weeks in Maine and Vermont. Colours were great, but, are turning past their peak, now. It rained cats and dogs over the past week or so. I will be in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island & New Brunswick, for the next few days, before returning to the States via Maine and the Acadia National Park, in Bar Harbor. Enjoy your trip. Coach Man.

My folks have been in the area for the past 2 weeks.
CoachMan, they were in NovaScotia when you went over on the Cat. They took the 'origional' trip on the Cat to NovaScotia 8 years or so ago in June when they had my daughter with them. It was a big party, with lots of food, and music and dancing, and local royalty - they really enjoyed it. BUT I am pretty sure they drove this time, to avoid the rough seas, Mom turns green just thinking about the ocean moving beneath her. My Aunt and uncle are with my folks, any time anyone goes to New England with them, they have to go to Peggy's Cove, according to Mom it's the most beautiful spot on earth. CluckingHen - have you driven the Kangamagus Highway in northern New Hampshire? It is gorgeous, and there are several nice hiking trails located on the highway, and look out points, with nice views. I can't imagine not finding good food along the way - but it's hard to 'ruin' a fresh lobster - and if you can eat lobster, why order anything else? Our first stop - the one that 'signifies' that we've made it back to Maine, is the first meal at the Trenton Bridge, Trenton Maine. Neat, quaint little spot along side the road, a MUST stop if you are in the area, and enjoy lobster. http://www.trentonbridgelobster.com/ Dh and I also ate our way through New England eating lobster bisque, clam chowder, lobster, lobster and crab sandwiches. We also manage to find a few great ice cream stops. Stay away (IMO) from chain restaurants, and follow the locals to lunch. My folks have been gone for a couple weeks, and I expect it'll be another week before they head toward home. They've been going that direction for years, and have to stop, stay and visit with all the B&B owners they've come to love over the past 15 years or so of visiting every year. My personal favorite view, was the ocean from Gloucester Maine. There were whale watches, and schooner tours of the ocean. We did a whale watch, but didn't get to go on a Schooner tour, (Mom was green after the whale watch for days) - that is on the top of my list for things to do on our next trip. CluckingHen - I hope the rest of your trip is more exciting than what is behind you. We enjoyed Niagra Falls, but IMO it hailed in comparison to the coastline ....ie Gloucester and that area. I could have sat at the marina in Glloucester all week, and watched them work on repairing an old boat, to make it sea worthy again. It was completely gutted when we were there - and we watched them finish it from a webcam at home. I wish I was with you! |
