This is really terrific. I applaud the city's leaders over the last few years for encouraging this kind of growth. Some new developments (like the landing and convention center) will be attracting visitiors of various expanded demographics, while businesses like those listed above will make Branson a more attractive place for a quality workforce to call home.
Bravo! |

This is NOT progress.
Sorry Guys,
Guess it is the American and Free Enterprise in me,but, I disagree emphatically that the "so called" progress Mr. Purvis is GOOD! Anytime government steps into the Free Enterprise equation it costs every taxpayer. The use of TIF to artificially stimulate the Branson Hills area is a travesty. It attracts businesses with taxpayer subsidies that will compete with businesses that are NOT financed at the public trough. These businesses Mr. Purvis mentioned would have come to our community anyway if they saw potential. The making of Branson into a clone of every other community will NOT bring visitors. Tell me one reason an area visitor will come to Branson to see more of the same Franchises they can see back home. Branson, attracts visitors by UNIQUENESS not by following the plastic and neon Pied Pipers of commercialism. Protect our hills, lakes, beauty and native courtesy...that is far more important than TIF Financed franchises. Hopefully Branson city hall is recognising their folly...and will stay out of stimulus that hurts true SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Don't beleive all the HYPE (hyperbole) of TIFS...simply take a look at Branson Meadows (It is city TIF supported) AND it is over HALF EMPTY. Don't beleive all you read in the City News and Press releases. John Logan |

Why? If they were going to be successful, they would have been here already. They would have purchased their own land and invested and built in order to make a profit. It's what we call the free market! Instead, they get "incentive" to build in a specific location to become an instant competitor of their neighbor. Seriously, what does Bed, Bath & Beyond have an exclusive on that you couldn't get a similar product at Target or Belk's? Unfortunately, Target and Belk's (TIF developments) drove away the Bath & Body Works that used to be here. Of course that was also here by way of TIF. So, one TIF development drives a way another and another is created to compete with that one, and so on. Something has to give. Same goes for Books-A-Million. Target has all the best-seller books you could ever want. So does Wal-Mart. Or, if you are looking for something rare or no longer on the best-seller list what's wrong with Amazon.com, Overstock.com, or barnesandnoble.com? So now, everybody will flock to this "new" location for a few years and they will experience great sales, then when the powers that be deem it necessary to "force" growth in a different area of town, they'll be screaming about the same unfair practices that are occurring now. It's taking revenue from one are to give to another. It's what I call The Law Of Conservation Of Currency. But, somehow, we'll find a way to creatively alter the numbers to show "growth" in Branson, like the recent $1Billion dollar number. The effect of inflation on this number has yet to be stated. A good example is the price of gold, now over $1000 per ounce or oil over $110 per barrel. Did the price of these commodities increase that much? How much could be attributed to the decrease in purchasing value of the dollar? I've heard it said that the supply of oil is UP and the demand of oil is DOWN and the only reason for the spike in price per barrel is due to the devaluation of the currency. This couldn't possibly be true could it? It HAS to be those EVIL oil companies..... or does it? In the meantime, these TIFs are inflating the value of commercial property to the point where if somebody wants to put in... oh let's say a Radio Shack, the rent will be astronomical to the point where there is no way for it to fly without help. But of course, who needs a Radio Shack right? Or a dentist, or eye doctor, or dry cleaner, or laundromat, right? It all sounds good on the surface, but take a bit of a deeper look and it all points to flawed thinking. But again, it may just be the "American and Free Enterprise" in me as well. Whew, it's been a while since I posted anything, I guess I just thought it ought to be a doozy. How'd I do?

[I'll give you a reason. We have many, many visitors from small towns, who do not have these stores in their town. "Bed, Bath & Beyond" is a prime example. Do a search and see how many posters said they loved that store and they wished there was one in their town. I know for a fact, these people will "seek out" the "Bed, Bath & Beyond", when they come to Branson.
And personally, as a local, I'm sick and tired of driving to Springfield, every time I want to buy something that cannot be obtained from a Souvenir Shop and I'm sick and tired of eating at "Country Buffets". I am SO happy that we are now getting a variety of restaurants and stores, and we can now spend our money in Branson, instead of having to spend it in Springfield or St. Louis or Kansas City. Not to mention the fact that we can now spend our money "year round", and not have to worry about whether or not the business is open, in the winter. Also, not to mention the fact that we can now EARN the money to spend, "year round".[/QUOTE] I agree Mellie! We have to drive to St. Louis to go to these type stores from where we live. I love having them in Branson! I think it is awesome. I can remember when we first started coming to Branson thinking they were really lacking in the restaurant area because there were only a few of those country restaurants that we thought were good. Now the choices are great! I love eating and shopping in Branson and the more you get, the better it gets. ![]() |

The shopping in Branson is true...When I worked at a local hotel I was amazed at the people who came ONLY to shop....some saw a show or two but it was SHOPPING....It was actually very entertaining to hear the arguements between husband and wife about how much room was left in the car...soooo....don't buy anymore "stuff" today!!. He would say....and she would say..."Whatever"..and off she would go shopping!!!....Branson is a FUN destination....entertainment for many is shopping and eating.....
![]() Entertainment for me is watching people shopping while I am eating..

There's just something about walking into a bookstore and being completely surrounded by books - same as walking into a library. You can feel the potential energy and wisdom emanating from the closed pages...just not the same when you shop in your pjs online.
As for having the same stores to shop at as at home (Wal-Mart, Target, etc.), it's a comfort thing. You know what you need, and you know they have it, and you don't need to search through several unfamiliar stores to find it. |
