Yup..great place. I'll go.
But yawl come on over hon,.......when you go out behind my house and go through the big gate...and stay on the little trail (road) for about 1/4 of a mile, you will come to some old corner posts that have been stacked to cover an old burial (cremation) spot for deceased cattle. Go north there for about another quarter, and you will be at the corner of the woods that goes the entire north edge of this ''house place'' property...its high here, and there is a big rock near a small spring...where if you are still on a very clear night there is a glow in the sky........like looking at the big orange moon.......only its transparent. Even the deer stop and look as they go by. We'd have to sit really still on the rock tho, to get an opportunity to watch those deer ''actually notice'' something is ''there''........Im not sure if it is in the sky or just ''there''. It seems far away and yet it seems close..............and sometimes there are green thin streaks across the sky.......far to fast for a plane.......and even on a still night there is always a breeze on that little hill up from the corner posts near the woods where the deer cross. I'm beginning to think its not a phenominon of the Ozarks, scientifically speaking, but its HOLY, and I should just enjoy it, and ask fewer questions. You are welcome to come and go looking for it anytime.

I just read an article on AOL, about a town in texas that 14 people have seen a silent, orb with lights of different colors.
Some saw fighter jets chasing it, in which the air force denies........... what my mother saw as a girl that followed her and her brother was bright as the moon, no sound and went straight to their house and shot straight up, was desribed the same way.....

This must be what is also called the "Spook Light". I haven't been there myself, but I've heard that it's a pretty freaky experience.

Hornet spooklight
This is what is called the "Hornet spooklight". Hornet was a small village near where the spooklight occours. I've never heard it called "Devils prominade".
People have been seeing it for the past 100 years. Experts have come out at different times over the years to try to explain it, and while some have seen it they cant explain it. It has been on national TV a few times, I remember a show from the late 70's-early 80's called "Real Incredible" where there film crew caught it on film. There is a gravel road that it appears on, people drive there, and park with their lights off. sometimes it appears, sometimes not. I have never seen it myself. Lots of theries about it, some say marsh gas, others say lights from nearby highway. I think people were seeing it before the highway was built and there were many cars around. |

Hi,
We returned to "spooklight road" last summer after not going since I was in high school. The road is paved now. When I was in high school, we saw a light, almost like a campfire, in the middle of the road on the crest of a hill. We used to park our car on the side of the road in the opposite direction and look out the back window. I haven't seen it since I've "grown up." My friends would tell a story about crossing devil's promenade three times. After the third time, the devil would come and grant you a wish at the expense of your soul. Ahh. . .good times. |

Devil's Promenade
Devil's Promenade is actually an area near the spooklight in NE Okla/SW Missouri. DP is the name of the bridge that crosses the Spring River near Quapaw, OK on the way to the spooklight from Miami, OK, my hometown. Devil's Promenade used to be a one lane spooky creaky bridge that I was afraid for my mom to drive over. By the time I could drive, they replaced the bridge with a modern one. From the bridge, you can see Lover's Leap, a rock that overlooks the Spring River, and resembles an Indian Chief. As legend has it, two Indian lovers from opposing area tribes(there were lots of them)leaped to their death in the icy river below. At night, while driving over the bridge you can supposedly hear a woman weeping.
But the spooklight is about a 5-10 min drive from DP. I've seen it many times. It is a ball of light that floats over the road and fields. Pretty freaky. I would actually be more afraid to go out there now then when I was a fearless teenager. OzarkNurse and I went out there COUNTLESS times as teenagers. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

ahhhhh, good times, good times. Wouldn't go out there anymore, too many crazy, drunk people. Ozarkman asked me out for the first time ever on Spooklight road. Wow, where have the years gone? It's really sad that the Hoffman Mansion is not there anymore. Another spooky sight near Devils Promenade.

It's probably impossible to find now - except maybe on Ebay or Amazon used, but there was an excellent documentary video made in the early 90's called Haunted Hills: True Ghost Stories of the Ozarks. It has loads of neat stuff - mostly about Eureka Springs, but it has a great segment about the spooklight - and fwiw - the guy in the interview about the spooklight was a high school buddy of my dad's.
