Who has advice on Mexico?

DH and I are thinking of a trip to Mexico. We chose Mexico because it seemed to meet all the criteria for the things we usually do in Florida, but wanted to try a new location: deep sea fishing, snorkeling/scuba, beach, and some outdoor exploring (nature, outdoor markets, etc.)

I was looking on VRBO, and realized I have absolutely zero to go on as far as what areas we should look at. Any suggestions out there?

No really,
Where in Mexico are you considering.

We have a book somewhere around here on travel in Cancun and the peninsula. I think I can find it for you.

That's just it...I'm not sure where the best place would be to go for all the stuff we want to do. I think I'll try to find some brochures.

My daughter and son-in-law have a timeshare, in Cozumel. If you'll pm your email address to me, I'll have her email some info to you. They love it, there...enough to buy a timeshare, I guess.

My favorite part of Mexico is the Tulum area.

The beach below is typical, and best of all, look how few people are there.
The reason is that this beach (as you can see on the left) has only one way in----swimming!

My vote would be the area known as the RIVIERA MAYA, just south of cancun....... that would also include TULUM. beautiful water perfect for snorkling and scuba diving, nice white beaches. PLAYA DEL CARMEN is a great little town as NASCARDUCK can attest to that. PLAYA has 5th ave. wich is blocks and blocks of shops, restaurants and bars, you can catch the ferry to cozumel for the day. PLAYA is about 45 minutes south of cancun...... if you do alot of scuba diving COZUMEL would be a good choice.

We have been to Cancun and Acapulco in the past. I would definitely suggest the Caribbean side (East Coast). The water is crystal clear and all types of blues and greens. The Acapulco side is not even close to as pretty.

The Playa Del Carmen and Tulum area is what I'd recommend. It's less crowded than Cozumel or Cancun. The beaches and snorkeling are perfect, the food is fabulous...real deal Mexican food, very fresh seafood, people selling cold Corona on the streets for $1, etc. Plus you have awesome Mayan ruins nearby, if you're into history. And, you can still take a ferry to Cancun for an afternoon if you want.
Playa is just about the closest thing to paradise on earth That I can imagine.

side note: If you go to the Tulum area, I'd rent the Mel Gibson movie "Apocalypto" sometime before you go. It's very very interesting stuff, and it all happened right in that area.

When we went on a cruise, one of our stops was Cozumel (this was '99). While we didn't stay there overnight, it was our favorite stop. The water was beautiful and the beach we went to was deserted. We did however, go in October, so that may be why. I have a few pictures of the beach if you'd like to see. Send me a PM and I'll try to get them to you.

I had an aquantaince who owned a fish/snorkling shop and he traveled to Cozumel several times a year.

Another question:

If you go deep sea fishing and catch something....what do you do with the fish? Can it be shipped to you?

I would agree with everything Bluesman said. We injoyed this area much more than the Cancun area. The reef is very close in down there and the beaches were fantastic.

I took the whole family andwe did one of those all inclusive deals and had a ball.

Fish in Mexico

When We Went There A Few Years Ago (cancun) We Went Deep Sea Fishing. My Wife Caught A Very Large Barracuda And The Guys On The Boat Kept It And Sold It For Catch Of The Day To Some Resturant. The Other Fish We Caught We Took To An Island And The Guys On The Boat Cooked It Over An Open Fire And Cooked Up Some Other Stuff And We Had A Wonderful Lunch. I Am Not Sure What They Do If You Want To Keep It. Hope You Have Fun Where Ever You Go.

Remember....Mexico is another country. If you catch a big fish in Florida and want to ship it home, yeah...maybe that's a possibility. But from Mexico? Not likely. Probably the best you could do is find some place to cook it for you.
