We agree that the people here in Branson make it a great place to visit (and live). But, that won't bring visitors back time and time again. Last year Branson had a net decline in visitors that approached 1 million. The people here were no less helpful, friendly or upbeat than they have always been.
The decline was due, in part, to gas prices and the sluggish economy. But there is something else that needs to be addressed and that contributes to declining visitors. Many of those coming to Branson are in my age group or older. Baby boomers who are living on a fixed income. Sure, they came to see Andy Williams and Dick Clark's shows - but as they age, the same old shows aren't going to continue drawing crowds. If we are going to tie our future to music and tourism, we need to start looking ahead a little and realize that Branson needs new acts - we don't have to get rid of the "older shows" but we do need to look to the future and start planning on getting some new music up on those stages. Remember the roadside attractions of the 50s? They did well because of the generation they served, and then they died. So, yes, by all means, keep up the things that have made Branson, Branson. The wonderful attitudes of those who live here, the belief in family values and the cheerful smiles on the faces of those who serve the visitors. But, don't stagnate the very thing that made this a tourist destination - provide entertainment for all ages (Silver Dollar City is a role model in doing this). It's time to face the fact that we need fresh, new and exciting acts on stage, alongside those older shows that can still bring in the baby boomers. |

Two questions:
Blogbot, how do you have 0 posts but started many threads? dandm, WHat souce gave you a 1 million visitor decline? Is that a specific demographic and age group, or have you gotten that as a total? Thanks .
