What did you think of American Idol tonight? My favorite is Melinda Doolittle. Who is your favorite?

I love the show..even when it's not real good...roflol.
I think few of these kids had ever heard of the songs they sang tonight.... My fav is Melinda D. too....I do like the other gal who wore the long white dress too....she is very very very talented...it will be a draw between them. The others are great kids but not singers like the two girls with the ''voices''. Even Simon agrees |

I was kind of mixed about tonight. As usual, it's plainly obvious to anyone with ears that Melinda and Lakisha are far and away better singers than the rest of the bunch that's left ---but--- I'm also beginning to worry that the fact that Simon keeps on and on about it every single week may backfire causing one or both of them to be the victim of a voter backlash. I loved both Melinda's version of "Home" and Lakisha's version of "God Bless The Child" but I've never really associated either of those songs very strongly with Diana Ross. I know that Diana starred in the film version of The Wiz but it was a major flop and the Stephanie Mills version of that song is the one that is always played whenever I hear it somewhere. Same with God Bless The Child, Diana played Billie Holiday(who wrote the song) in the film, but I've always associated it with Billie Holiday herself or perhaps Gladys Knight or Aretha Franklin both of who recorded it also. It was an odd evening all the way around with so many of the songs being weird choices. I kind of agree with Cheesecake in that most of those younger contestants have probably never heard of the songs they were singing but I also wonder if they picked the songs themselves or if the producers and coaches helped pick them. Diana Ross has had such a long and successful career with so many hit songs both with the Supremes and by herself that it seems very very odd that so many of them picked lesser or little known hits instead of the really great songs. On the plus side, Diana herself (or Miss Ross as she prefers to be called LOL) seemed very nice and even sincere when she was working with the contestants. She has a really horrible reputation of thinking herself a bit superior to other people (which is a nice way to put it) so it was nice to see her show a genuine interest in encouraging them.

Another vote for Melinda Doolittle!!!! I love the fact that she is so humble too. If more entertainers would be humble the world would be a better place!!!!LOL.

I loved the fact that she started crying when she finished and people in the audience were going wild. She's really genuinely moved and surprised that people are so taken with her. It's really refreshing for a contestant. It was even sweet when Paula started crying along with her. I think it's probably the first time I ever saw Paula cry on the show when it was her emotions getting the best of her instead of the liquor in the coke cups.

I like Melinda but I do wish she would quit acting so surprized that people like her...come on , its been a month now, its good that she is humbled but to me its getting old also. Lakisha is my favorite and I like Gina's rock style. BUt this year AI is just not very exciting to me like the last few years. REMEMBER... this is just MY opinion. ![]() |

I only watched a few minutes of it last night, & Melinda was one I saw. She's very good. I can't stand Diana Ross. I read the "unauthorized" bio, & then tried to read hers, but couldn't get through it. It was like Geraldo Rivera's: Every other word was "I" or "ME". Sell 'em for what they think they're worth, & we could ALL retire. (I couldn't make it through Rivera's book, either. Talk about egos!)

Paula's tears? PFFFFT! Enough already!
I agree with Christisam, it isn't as interesting a show as in years past or since Carrie won AI. If it were only me, I would find a good movie, but DH likes it! Watching the last 2 or 3 shows of AI would be enough for me. Blake seems to be too full of himself. Brandon forgetting the words! Chris also has a good voice. Melinda would be my choice. .....and I'm really weary Lakisha for several reasons, no matter how good she may be! Some of these people need to take a good long look in the mirror at themselves IF they want to be front & on Center Stage. Looks does matter in this kind of business!

It all depends on the genre that they wish to record in. Looks aren't really as important in the r&b/soul field which is where Lakisha or Melinda would end up at if they were to win. Their voices are perfectly suited for this type of music and there's a long history of big girls having great success in this field. Also, in the rock field people looking edgy and different is what gets a person noticed, those fans don't like their performers too polished looking. Of course if it ends up being someone aiming for a pop or country career then obviously looks are part of the package, or at least a bigger part of it than otherwise.

Sure some big people make it, but not on the average! It behouves me why anyone wouldn't want to improve themself! Guess I'll never know & don't spend time worrying about it either. ......just trying to take care of my own body for health's sake!

One has to change eating habits, which I've done! I've lost 18 lbs since November. ....not intending to sabotage this thread at all! As for Paula, either she needs some anti-depressants or to toughen up! W A Y too many tears! ![]()
