Late October around town

Spent this past Wednesday and Thursday nights in Branson at Ozark Valley Inn. As usual, it was a good stay.

Even though it was the third week of October, Branson is already ready for Christmas. The city has its decorations up on light poles. The Landing has the Christmas tree up plus there are Christmas trees in other locations around town including the new Chamber of Commerce by Branson Meadows, most banks and the new Mercy Clinic. Lights were up and on at the shopping center that has Coleman, Big Air Trampoline Park, etc.

Christmas starts at Shepherd of the Hills on November 1st and at SDC on November 2nd. The light displays were set up for the drive through on Expressway Lane but I am not sure when it opens for the season.

Shoji and the Stampede have started their Christmas shows. Speaking of shows the theaters we drove by on Wednesday and Thursday nights had good crowds. Choices had a lot of cars on both Wednesday and Thursday nights when we drove by. Looking forward to checking it out on a future trip.

We ate at Famous Dave's Wednesday night for the first time in a long time. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Famous Dave's, there was throwback pricing last week -- $10.99 for 6 ribs and 2 sides, brisket cheese fries for $4.99, pulled pork sandwich and 1 side for 4.99. But the bar was closed when we arrived at 7:30, and the wait staff was puzzled when we asked if one of many TVs in the dining area could be changed to the World Series. We told them what channel was showing the game but no one could find the channel on DirecTV. I guess they were puzzled since the Cardinals weren't playing in the Series. It will probably be awhile before we go back -- food taste was okay but the food temp was just warm. Wait staff seemed like they were more than ready for diners to leave so they could go home although closing time is supposed to be 9 pm. The bread pudding for $2 we took back to the room was really good when it was reheated.

Noticed that Buffalo Wild Wings was gone and a construction wall was set up in front of the location. Also noticed that it is really dark at the Landing, certainly could use more lighting at night.

We went up to Springfield Thursday. When we left Branson we took 248 out of Branson and drove west over to Highway 13. Saw some colorful trees and think the color will be even better this week and next. Also saw some nice color on the Highroad. And if you want a road trip, drive down to Harrison AR where the maples are changing and the color is wonderful and will continue to get better the next few weeks. Stop at Neighbors Mill for a good meal.

Coming back from Springfield we drove through Branson West and noticed the Country Mart is now a King Cash Saver, a cost plus 10% grocery store (same owners, just a different pricing format). Also noticed some more land prep near the Walmart intersection and noticed that construction has started on the empty lot in Notch that SDC used for years for overflow parking.

I know lots of folks pick up the free newspapers to find out what is going on in Branson. What was the Branson Register (which replaced the Independent) is now the Branson Globe. Branson This Week, BTW, has expanded distribution and is now available at some motels.
