Coffelt's Flea Mkt advertizes it. On 165 south of Titanic just past Chinese theater on the right.

Exclamation Lye soap

It ain't that hard to make at home... basically just rendered cooking fat & lye.
There are numerous recipes and instructions on the internet. Just a couple of cautions though; due to relatively new governmental anti-terrorism regulations, you have to show identification and sign before you can buy the lye and you need to be very careful making the stuff as it is caustic and will give a serious burn if splashed on skin in the raw state.

I can't swear to this but... seems like I've seen racks of them in some of the craft malls around town.

The Amish store on Gretna Road has it. That is where I bought mine the last time I was there.

I think we saw some there, too. We also saw some at the Apple Tree Mall. And I can't be sure, but I think we saw lye soap at the Branson Mill Craft Village as well.

They have it at most craft malls and even grocery stores in town. Saw it at the checkout at country mart the other day.

Just curious, what's the advantage of rendered hog fat and lye?

Lye is used to turn cod fillets into lutefisk... I have absolutely no use for the stuff.

rjw, lye soap is used in laundry to remove stains. Also, it will help with chigger, mosquito bites, etc. There are some other medicinal purposes along the line of skin problems, which I can't remember what!

It is great for the complexion. Any one who has trouble with rashes, acne, etc., it is wonderful. It is amazing what is so simple can do so much.

Lye is also used to turn corn into hominy

Quote:
Hominy is a food which consists of dried maize kernels which have been treated with an alkali in a process called nixtamalization.
Quote:
Nixtamalization typically refers to a process for the preparation of maize (corn), or other grain, in which the grain is soaked and cooked in an alkaline solution
That could explain your impulse to live in Nixa. Too much lutefisk has caused you to become Nixtamalized!

I love lutefisk but will refrain for inviting to fish ounch with lutefisk, pickeled Heering and Eel plus Linieakvavit.
