Fire in the Hole
I was at SDC today and rode Fire in the Hole. It had a "surprise" at the end that I didn't remember from prior years. Is that new this year, or is my memory just bad?

What was the surprise? Send me a PM and tell me if you don't want to mention it on here.

Thanks to the folks who have responded via PM. It seems that the "surprise" may be partially dependent on which coaster car you are in and partially on how hot it is outside.

So we'll get very wet dependent upon the car?

It has been part of the ride since it was built back in 1972. Many people say it wasn't, but I have seen the blueprints and it was there. Fire in the Hole's original concept name was The Devil's Den, the name for Marvel Cave over one hundred years ago.
Oh, the amount can be raised and lowered, so it can be open during Christmas. |

![]() When I rode Fire in the Hole a few days ago the coaster car hit a pool of water at the end resulting in a fairly large splash. It was nothing compared to the American Plunge splash, but enough to be very noticeable. I think the post above explains the situation... it is nothing new but has been there all the time, with the water level being raised or lowered according to the season. This was the first time I'd been on FITH during the summer. My prior visits have all been during the early spring, fall or at Christmas time. So the splash wasn't really new... just new to me! ![]() ![]()

I hate to go off topic, but am I the only one that misses the Water Boggin?

After many years of riding the Water Boggin, I finally got tired of the long line up the many stairs, and then the short ride. Yes, it was very fun, however, for me it just got to be not worth it. I mean, sometimes it seemed like you waited forever to get up to the top. Of course, it could also be attributed to getting quite a bit older! Anyway, yes, from a nostalgia point of view, I miss it. but I also miss the simpler days of SDC, when it was truly just a slice of "Ozark Living" long ago, so to speak. But then, Fire in the Hole went in, and it was thrill-seeking from then on. But that is fun too! I wouldn't want it to change back, as even now many years later I still love Powder Keg, Wildfire, and Thunderation. And so do the kids and grandkids!

I remember my favorite memory about the surprise at the end of Fire in the Hole. Back in the late 80's my best friend and I were at SDC with my parents and aunt. My mom told us that since we were going back to SDC not to ride any water rides because we were staying for the show in Echo Hollow. (this is when the dillards and mercy were down there). Well, we found a loophole in this plan. Fire in the Hole is not considered a "water ride" but the first two rows do get a little water on them. We rode it on the front row over and over again and got very wet. Needless to say, my mom wasn't very happy with us being wet, but she knew I am just like her on loopholes and couldn't help but buy us some "Dry" clothes to change into so we could stay for the show. When she was a teenager, she thought alot of ways to get around the set rules grandma had made and found loopholes to do things anyway. So I have to say I love the little surprise on Fire in the Hole. I just have a slight tendency to "forget" to tell anyone new that is with us about it. Gotta have a little fun.
