Now I am researching car rentals. My gosh is it expensive. We have only rented a car twice and it was just for a couple of days. I guess I am just cheap.

Check Fox Car Rental to see if you can get a better deal. They are a national (though limited) rental agency and I have seen them have the cheapest rates at times in San Diego. They are not always on the big travel websites.

Be sure and plan some time walking around and exploring Balboa Park. It is huge will all kinds of museums. It can be a lot of fun.

Try a harbor cruise, or if you have a lot of money(!), take a chartered sailboat cruise! San Diego bay is about the best sailing grounds on the whole West Coast.

Call the airport - but I'm 99% sure that the doors to the airport do not open until 6am, and I know that our shuttle bus was in no hurry, they knew that... but we didn't.

Thanks I will check it out.

The airlines website did say that their counter opened at 4:30 at San Diego airport. So hopefully that is correct. Since they want our luggage at least 45 minutes prior to the flight they would have to open up by at least 5:30.

I was so bent out of shape, waiting, NOT patiently for the darn car rental service to open up, and then had to WAIT longer, while they checked in all the cars who were lined up, before we loaded the shuttle for the ride to the airport, I was fit to be tied. The shuttle driver reassurred me that we wouldn't be missing our flight... but like you, I was trying to get there 2 hours before my flight.

Thought I'd give you a heads up, so you could ask the right questions, and not panic if it happens to you, like I did. Hopefully that won't be the case.

Have a GREAT time in San Diego..

I lived in San Diego most of my life.. before moving back to MO..

Here's some sites for you to have a look at.. Hope this helps..

A great site for those visiting San Diego.. info from a local..

Have a look at San Diego

Catch a Padre game if they are in town.. fun!

Give yourself PLENTY of time when you're going somewhere.. The traffic is bad and just because you can see the tower for Sea World.. it's still going to take some time to get there..

Sea World http://seaworld.com/sandiego/parkinformation/
Zoo http://www.sandiegozoo.org/zoo/index.html..

Go over the San Diego Coronado Bridge http://www.coronado.ca.us/bridge.html
to the Hotel Del Coronado..
We never stayed there but you can go and have a nice lunch and walk around the historic hotel and beach
http://www.hoteldel.com/

Take a harbor cruise.. it's fun.. but remember the sunscreen & a hat..
I didn't and suffered a bad sunburn .. but Loved the cruise.
http://www.hornblower.com/harbortours.asp?port=sd#

after the harbor cruise, we walk down to
Anthony's fish grotto.. it's a good place to eat.. We don't go inside the restaurant but go to the little take out area (Fishette) where you can sit outside and eat.. Watch the boats in the bay and see the planes coming into the airport..

Have a great time in San Diego.. and I want to hear all about your trip when you get back.

If you get a chance check out the little fire museum in the gas lamp district.

That is where we are staying - Days Inn Hotel Circle. I had a hard time finding something that look decent for under $200.00. I hope it is OK.

We enjoyed our stay at Days Inn.. The room was decorated nicely and was VERY clean.. The staff was very nice and even though we were close to the Freeway, we didn't hear any traffic noises..

The trolley is great for transportation, and make sure you check out balboa park and all the museums there.

San Diego is a gorgeous place, and I miss it a LOT.

Well this stinks. Long story but we just changed our San Diego trip that was scheduled from two weeks from today to August. Had to pay more on airfare which really stinks. I am more mad right now about the whole situation.

Do you own a gps system? If the roads are current on the gps system, that could help you out alot. If you don't have one, perhaps you know someone who would loan you theirs. We took ours on the plane when we went to Florida in April. Car rentals also may offer them for an additional charge.

What a bummer, TH But at least it sounds like you didn't loose the amount you had already paid for! But I know, it stinks when the 'same' vacation ends up costing you more $$$$ Plus the disappointment at not being able to go when you had planned and had to postpone! Hard to see it now, but maybe there will be a 'silver lining' in the dark cloud that now hangs over your head.

Lego Land is nearby too and would be fun with little ones.

Hope all ends up working out for you in August. All else fails, could you drive your vehicle out? Gas may be cheaper than paying for airfare/luggage, and then again it might not.

My high school friend is stationed at Camp Pendalton near Oceanside and about 45 min from SD. She drives with her family from there to Texas every year. She says it saves them in the long run with the price of airfare what it is.
