Upper Taney can be very dangerious when there is heavy current from generation at Table Rock. I know Phil is constantly warning people about watching out for the downed trees. Even below the trophy area which ends at Fall Creek there are submerged, and partially submerged trees that can cause this type of tragedy.
While drift fishing you have to always be aware of what you are drifting toward.

A little more information on this tragedy. From a post on OzarkAnglers.com. Not substituted, but I would not think of any reason someone would falsify this story.

They were attempting to free their fly line from the tree that's down at the top of the first island. The boat got pinned against the tree in the process and capsized. It was a group of sponsors with the Project Healing Waters event this week. Horrible tragedy at an otherwise great event. Let it be a reminder of the dangers of our tailwaters.
If you are not familiar with Project Healing Waters, it is a program that takes wounded veterans out for a day of fly fishing on Taneycomo.
